The Van de Veldes: Greenwich, Art and the Sea

  • The Queen's House Romney Road London, SE10 9NF United Kingdom (map)

The Studio © National Maritime Museum, London.

This splendid exhibition celebrates the work of Willem Van de Velde the Elder and Younger, famous throughout seventeenth-century Europe as marine draughtsmen and painters. They were enticed to England from the Netherlands in 1673 by Charles II with a stipend of £100 each and a studio in the Queen’s House. The exhibition explores the role of their studio, where they worked together for twenty years, and their working practices and will include some of their finest paintings and drawings which were to revolutionise marine painting in Britain. Highlights include the newly-conserved painting, A Royal visit to the Fleet and the famous Solebay Tapestry depicting the Burning of the Royal James at the battle of Solebay on the 28th May 1672, together with spectacular pen and ink drawings.
