The exhibition ‘The Cookham Brotherhood: The Art of Gilbert and Stanley Spencer’ celebrates the profound influence that Cookham had on Stanley (1891-1959) and his brother Gilbert (1892-1979) and demonstrates both their unified vision as well as their rivalry. Idyllic landscapes and intimate portraits show their different approaches - Stanley increasingly became more concerned with the metaphysical and religious otherworldliness of the village whereas Gilbert, being ‘more of the people’ was more practically minded and considered by Stanley to be the more accomplished landscape artist.
