Rapturous accounts of the glories of Spencer House appeared soon after its completion in 1766; I know not in England a more beautiful place of architecture. Nor is the fitting up and furniture of the rooms inferior to the beauties of the outside (Adam Smith in 1769). The house was built in 1756-66 for John, 1st Earl Spencer and is the finest surviving townhouse in London. Its splendid interiors include the enchanting Palm Room designed by John Vardy and James Stuart’s Painted Room which, with its superb furniture, is one of the earliest neo-classical interiors in the country.
